Welcome to the foreign trade visualization application! This tool allows a visual representation of the statistics of Estonia’s foreign trade in goods. The quick and simple visualizations are in the form of treemaps, maps, line charts and stacked area charts. Foreign trade statistics concern the movement of goods between Estonia and other countries. The concepts of exports and imports are used to indicate commodity flows.

The application includes information on the main partner countries of Estonia’s exports and imports, the countries of destination and consignment. At the same time, the tool allows creating overviews that are more general. It is possible to download both graphic representations as well as the relevant data. The data, starting with the year 2004, can be visualized by year, quarter and month and by countries of origin, consignment and destination.

Data

Commodities are visualized using the Combined Nomenclature (CN). The Combined Nomenclature is a further development of the World Customs Organization’s Harmonized System (HS) nomenclature. The Combined Nomenclature is the goods classification used within the European Union for the purposes of foreign trade statistics and customs duties. The nomenclature was introduced in Estonia in May 2004. Sections are the highest level in CN, their total number is 21 and they are indicated with Roman numerals. The section number is not expressed in the commodity code. Sections consist of 99 chapters (2-digit CN code). Each chapter divides into 4, 6 and 8-digit commodity codes.

Links to the full version of a corresponding year’s Combined Nomenclature and information about changes in the codes can be found on the following website.

The data for visualizations are obtained from Statistics Estonia’s public statistical database table VKK10.

Countries are classified according to the Nomenclature of Countries and Territories for the External Trade Statistics of the Community and Statistics of Trade between Member States (GEONOM), which can be found on the following website.

Commodity quantity supplementary units can be found on the website of Statistics Estonia.

Methodology

In Estonia, information on transactions with EU Member States are collected by Statistics Estonia using the Intrastat questionnaire. Data on trade in goods with non-EU countries are obtained from customs declarations submitted to the Tax and Customs Board.

Intrastat questionnaires are submitted in Estonia by enterprises that are registered in the VAT bearers register and whose turnover for trade with EU Member States exceeds the statistical threshold set for the reporting year.

Information on the countries where Estonia has exported goods and imported goods from is available by partner country.

The value of goods is in current prices and does not include services and transit. The collected data are published according to the special trade system.

The foreign trade data of the current year are revised monthly, and the two previous years are revised twice a year (released in March and October). All data are published according to Statistics Estonia’s release calendar.

Estimations

At the level of 4, 6 and 8-digit commodity codes, the tables include only collected data. Estimates for data losses caused by non-response or late response and enterprises below the statistical threshold are not made at the level of 4, 6 and 8-digit commodity codes in trade with EU countries. The estimations have been added to the database data at the section level, 2-digit commodity code level and country level.

Definitions

  • Exports of goods of Estonian origin – the export of goods produced or processed in Estonia to other countries. If two or more countries are connected with the production of an article, it is assumed that this article originates from the country where it was significantly processed last (it should be economically justified), resulting in the manufacture of a new product or completing an important manufacturing stage. If the country of origin is a European Union country, but the specific country is unknown, “EU” can be marked as the code. If the country of origin is unknown, “XX” should be marked as the code.
  • Exports – exportation of goods produced in Estonia, exportation of goods imported from a foreign country (re-exports), temporary exportation of goods for the purpose of processing abroad, re-exportation after inward processing and supplies for foreign vessels and aircraft stores. Exports exclude transit and services.
  • Imports – imports of goods into Estonia for domestic consumption and for resale to a foreign country, imports for inward processing with notification of intended return and re-imports after processing outside of Estonia. Imports exclude transit and services.
  • Commodity net weight is the weight of a commodity without packaging. Net weight is presented in kilograms.
  • Commodity value is the statistical value of goods: imports are valued in CIF (purchase price) and exports are valued in FOB (sale price). The statistical value of the commodity is in euros.
  • CIF value is the value of commodity, which includes the cost of commodity and the costs connected with the transportation and insurance of commodity up to the border of the importing country.
  • FOB value is the value of commodity, which includes the cost of commodity and the costs connected with the transportation and insurance of commodity up to the border of the exporting country.
  • Special trade system is the system of compiling foreign trade statistics, which takes into account goods crossing the boundary of the free circulation area.
  • Partner countries In exports, the partner country is the country of destination. In imports, there can be two partner countries: 1) country of consignment – the country from where a commodity has directly arrived; 2) country of origin – the country where the goods have been produced. If the country of origin is unknown, XX should be marked as a code. This is related to supplies for vessels and aircraft. Indicating the actual country of destination is not required in this case.
